Frenchr is a passion project created by a busy developer that's learning a fourth language - French. I build targeted tools along the way solving the french learning problems I hit myself. They help me first, and I hope that they help you too.
"Nothing worth having ever comes easy." As a French beginner, I have to tell myself that a lot, because the French language is beautiful and it's so hard to learn. I'm 9 months into my French learning journey and I'm still struggling. Some days it's the noun genders that defeat me (this is the first language I'm learning that has gendered nouns and it's still a crazy concept to me). Other days it's the mountain of grammar rules. Or the exceptions, and the exceptions to the exceptions.
Sometimes I wonder if French was invented as a prank, and if you master is eventually, you're granted the privilege to correct everyone else's grammar and pronunciation for the rest of your life.
I'm complaining, yes (how very French of me!), but I do love the journey. As a busy developer and a cat mom of 2 cats, I have very limited free time to learn, so I'm constantly looking for ways to make the most of the time I do have. My learning style is inspired by the book Ultralearning, which is all about learning with intention. Experimenting relentlessly and focusing on high-impact activities, rather than simply putting in more hours. Targeted training on specific concepts is a big part of my routine. I look for tools that help me on a specific topic, and when I can't find one, I build it myself.
I built Frenchr to be a collection of tools that solve specific problems and provide targeted training on certain concepts for French learners, especially English-speaking French beginners like me. I also write about my learning journey in the Frenchr Journal, sharing what I'm learning, my struggles, and tips and resources that I find helpful along the way. If you're on a similar journey, I hope you find something useful here.
Let's become a little more Frenchr every day! 🇫🇷
